The Water, Sustainability and Development Doctorate Program is conceived as a program capable of offering advanced, high-quality training in topics specific to the Campus Auga. In this way, and considering the lines of specialization of the Campus, it brings together three thematic research blocks: Water, Sustainability and Development.

The WSD Program exposes teaching-learning processes oriented towards the comprehensive training of professionals, who are connected with the environment and who are socially valued.

Academic, scientific and professional interest

Only PhD programme in in the University System of Galicia.

The Water, Sustainability and Development (WSD) Doctorate Program was implemented in the 2017/2018 academic year as one of the strategically oriented actions of the Campus Auga. The design of this doctoral program responds to the need to consolidate a differentiated and specialized training offer in the themes of the Campus Auga (Food, Environment and Water Management), which promotes the comprehensive training of professionals, connected with the demands of the environment closer, and that is valued socially.

It is a unique doctoral program in the University System of Galicia that in its formulation took into account the following factors:

  • Its location within the framework of the province of Ourense and the North Galicia-Portugal Euroregion.
In this territory, water constitutes a distinctive and strategic resource for economic, social and cultural development.
  • The current socio-economic situation.
At this point, research is conceived as a fundamental basis in the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of economic and social competitiveness.
  • The great relevance of its thematic context.
In this regard, it should be noted that almost three quarters of jobs in the world depend on water, and that its lack or its conservation problems are factors that would cause limitations for future economic growth. (World report of the United Nations on the valuation of water resources, Water and employment. World Water Day. Geneva. March 22, 2016).
  • The possibilities of labor insertion of future graduates.
In this sense, an offer of knowledge was presented that is related to professional demand, in an effort to respond to the need for researchers who lead R&D&I activities and projects in all sectors related to water, both in the public and private sphere.

The Doctoral Program in WSD is structured into three thematic areas: Water, Sustainability and Development, which include the lines of research developed in the program, which are related to the themes of the specialization lines of the Campus Auga: Food, Environment and water management.

The implementation of the Doctoral Program in WSD was carried out by integrating the research staff of the teaching centers attached to Campus Auga, and fostering specific collaboration with other universities and university institutes in the North of Portugal, with which, within the framework of this doctoral program collaboration agreements were formalized.

These collaboration agreements signed with the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), the Universidade de Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), and the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB), served to favor collaboration in the development of the Program, promote the enrollment of students, promote the participation of researchers from the IPP, UTAD and IPB through the direction and/or with the direction of theses associated with this Program, and develop common work in the different research areas. The signing of these agreements also served to integrate these institutions into the Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program, with the Universidade de Vigo being the only responsible university with the capacity to issue the doctorate degree.
